Don't Hold Onto The Old Pony!

Slicked designer ponytails work well if you desire it simple or sophisticated, but the main purpose is for longevity. I would say two weeks tops for me. OK, for other people, I'll give you three weeks. No longer....and that all depends on how the style holds up. It varies depending on if you received a fresh relaxer the same day. Then, yes, three weeks maybe fine. But otherwise, Ladies, please let the old go and go get a fresh hairstyle.
Don't Hold On To The Old Pony when.....

1. the smoothness of your hair begin to crack/separate.
2. when you have to keep applying gel to reslick it.
3. it looks dull and flaky.

Please don't let it get to this extreme. The least you can do is shampoo your own hair, blow it out and style until you can get to your hairstylist.
Better yet, call me at 973-572-2819 * Darlene, The Hair Dr.

Get Rid of Dry Flaky Scalp

Many people who experience dry flaky scalp are always looking for a topical cream to get rid of the problem. One must realize that the problem is not without but within.

Your scalp has pores through which each hair strand grows. It is also apart of one of the largest eliminating channels of the body, the skin. So if you're not getting the proper nutrition and water intake on a daily basis, it will effect the scalp. Water helps to lubricate the skin/scalp and will eliminate dry and flaky skin.

Therefore, do the easy and most cost effective thing to get rid of the problem of dry flaky scalp.......DRINK WATER!

DON'T CUT TO STUNT!

Timing is everything, Ladies, when you go to the Hair salon for a "New Cut"! And NOW IS NOT the right time of the month. This is the time of the month when things seem to wind down and decrease. It is a time where projects should be becoming to a close. It's also a time where people are a little more sensitive and/or emotional.....there's more, but you should get the picture.

So, think about it. If it is a time of decreasing, or closing of projects, would you want to get a "NEW" funky hair cut NOW or wait til timing is more effective in doing new things for yourself.....like creating a New Look with your hair. Cutting your hair at this time will only stunt it's growth. This is why some women have challenges with their hair growing back full like "it used to be".

Ask your Hairstylist when is the best time to cut your hair? If they don't have the answer, find another Hairstylist.

DANGERS OF BRAIDS!

Although most women use braids to cut down on time invested doing their hair or going to the Hair salon on a regular basis, one must take percaution. Yes, I agree that having your hair braided saves so much time, especially if you have a busy schedule. However, too much of what we call a "GOOD THING" isn't GOOD AT ALL!

This may not apply to you, but someone you know-pass it on.
Think about it, look at the diameter of each hair strand of natural hair to the diameter of braided hair that is added on. Is it in equal amount or more? Many times it's more, if you be honest, even with micro braids. Also, how tight are the braids? Do you or someone you know experience head tension when the braids are completed?.....I'm just keeping it light on this question.

Also and lastly, compare the fullness of your hair or someone you know from 5 yrs. ago to now; 2 yrs. ago to now. Is their a difference in fullnes? If so, you/they must reconsider getting braids because your hair is in a "TRAMA STATE"...AND YOU/THEY WILL EVENTUALLY LOSE IT"

Beautifully Cut for a Man!

I ran into a friend who I haven't seen for a few years. She orginally wore her hair in "sista girl locks". She decided to cut her hair, but I didn't know to what extreme until I saw her.

It is o.k. to change, cutting your locks for a new beginning, but women should never cut their hair like a man. Leave the men cuts just for who they were created for, MEN! Don't get me wrong, her hair was sharp, but "beautifully cut for a man".

There ar so many georgeous hair cuts for women.

PLAN "B" FOR THE HAIR DR!

Don't ever think that doctors who have specific areas of expertise have not challenges? We do! Well this Hair Dr. experienced a hair challenge that I wasn't able to save because of time.

I had an appointment scheduled for 9AM this morning and my hair, so I thought, was the least of my concerns. My hair is all natural....meaning no color, no chemicals. The style I created for Sunday required a press/light straightening with a pressing comb. This normally lasts for a week or two depending on the weather.

The problem wasn't the weather, well in a sense the weather inside my home.....I normally turn the heat off when I'm resting because I tend to sweat. Last night I forgot and my head tie I use on my head slipped off during the course of the night. So I wake up sweating and because I wasn't fully aware I drifted back to sleep.

When I arose this morning, I touched my hair and knew that I had no time to repair, because my alarm wasn't set to give me more time to do my hair, "It was already done". So I used that time to rest even longer thinking I would just remove my hair tie like I did the previous morning and my hair would still be in place.

Thank God for "Fashionable Hair Scarves" and "Hats". With the weather being rainy, I used both and was on my way. Ladies, invest in several scarves and hats that you can wear as accessories to your outfit for business. It works!

The Hair Dr.'s here to help! Call Darlene at 973-572-2819

Natural Hair Wild-Out!

I saw a lady today wearing her natural hair, but it was a mess! She had it pulled in a ponytail with a head band around the front. I guess all of her hair wasn't long enough to fit in the ponytail holder in the back of her head. So she must have said, "the Hell with it!" and kept it moving..
I was going to give her the benefit of the doubt and blame it on a strong windy day, but I would be lying. Today was a beautiful day. She had no excuse. And even so, keep a comb or brush in your pocketbook. The easiest hairstyle to have and make it look Fabulous is a ponytail. How can you kill that style.....well, she did. She had a "NATURAL HAIR WILD-OUT!

There's no Hair Glory in this story!

Recently I've been coming across women with natural locks styled in beautiful updo's. There is so much fullness in the ends and the designs are Fabulous..The problem is, when you look at the roots, their hair is so much thinner. Even moreso, the hair is really pulled tight.

What happening is their Beautician, I'll call them Bootician, is so focused on the neatness and the tightness of the roots being twisted that they are loosing sight of the stress on the hair due to the length and weight of the hair strands. This is why lock touch-ups shouldn't be done every week but at least every two weeks to reduce the stress on the roots. If not, thinning of the hair roots and balding begins to take place.

Women should be responsible for their own hair and take Hair matters into their own hands by at least saying something to their Bootician regarding the thinning.

Just a thought from the Hair Dr.

Do you feel rushed by your Beautician/Hairstylist?

How do you feel when your beautician/hairstylist has rushed you in and out of their chair? Being a Hair Dr. and Designer, I don't like to rush or to be rushed when working with my clients. I remember years ago working in a Hair Salon it got to the point where my boss would give me a sign when I should be finished each client. I felt like I was always walking on pins and needles and that made me very uncomfortable.

There were many times that I wasn't satisfied with my finished design although my clients were. I love making women feel good inside and out, but the most important thing is that I'm also satisfied with the service I have given. If you feel your being rushed, say something. The salon should be a woman's heaven and when you leave you should be walking on cloud nine.

DON'T REMOVE YOUR OWN WEAVE!

Don't remove your own sow-in weave, especially if you don't know what you're doing.

I have a client scheduled for tomorrow. She had a weave and, I guess, she just had to get it out immediately. Well, she cut her own hair. Thank God for my daughter who came to her rescue and finished taking it out for her.

Unprofessional people, please let someone else take out your weave for you. Even if they aren't a professional, they can see where and where not to cut far better than you. Their eyes are directly over your head.

Now that's cutting to stunt the growth in a worse way! Just a NOTE from the Hair Dr. Darlene. email: www.darleneisradiant@gmail.com

INVISIBLE PARTS LEADS TO BALDING!

Normally, as the Hair Dr., I'm responsible for taking care of my daughter's hair. Every now and again I 'll treat her to the salon to get a different experience. Well, she so desired this new weave with the "INVISIBLE PART" and I negotiated to pay $85.00 vs. $130.00.

The salon did a Fabulous Job, so I thought. One week later it looked as if her part was getting wider and wider. Now mind you, weaves can last for at least a month. Because I know if I do it it's free, I told her she was keeping it for as long as she can. Going into the second week, her part has now become a bold spot, more like a bold line where the part originally was.

So, I have to have her take it out, because the health of her hair is more important than any amount of money I would give to have her hair designed.

What looks good isn't always good for the health of your hair and scalp!

Knots without the Locks!

I have a few clients that get relaxers (hair straighteners) and as the new growth grows in, they seem to just rake the top of their hair to cover the roots. This means the new growth becomes entangled and creates knots.

This makes my job hard for many reasons, but I'll give you two.

1. It's time consuming to detangle the hair without losing some; many times a lot, if you don't take your time and use a conditioner.
2. My client's complain when they see hair in the sink, like it's my fault.

I just keep it real from the beginning, so they know what to expect and why. This keeps me from being accused of something I'm not responsible for.

DON'T LET JUST ANYONE PUT THEIR HANDS IN YOUR HEAD!

Have you ever went to a salon feeling REAL GOOD and left feeling REAL BAD OR UNEASY and not sure why?

Well, atmosphere is so important when you are going to have your hair done. The order and cleanliness of the salon is important. What type of music is playing to set the atmosphere, if any?
The MOST IMPORTANT thing; who is the person working in and on your hair as well as over your head? What is their attitude like when they greet you? What is their conversation like? Are they rushing you in and out of the chair or are they concerned with the desired result you are looking for? Are they gossiping to others or even to you? Are you accepting this or joining in with the gossip?

Do an evaluation the next time to go to the salon. You will discover the answer of why your Fabulous mood has turned into a Flop. A day at the hair salon should be a day of relaxation and rejuvenation.

DANGERS OF BRAIDS!

"DANGERS OF HUMAN HAIR EXTENSIONS"

Hair from a human whether donated for your cause from a living or deceased human carries the personality and attitude of the person it belongs to. If the person is a "sweet" person, a "mean" person "bipolar", nervous, worrier, etc., those vibrations are transferred into each hair strand. In other words, hair carries the spirit of the person.
Your mind being such a powerful force of creation is always receiving (sensitive) sound and vibrations which goes into the inner being of you. What goes in always come out. So if you ever wondered why you, a friend, loved one, child is acting crazy, lazy, anxious or any behavior that maybe out of the norm for them, just check to see if they've ever had braids.

How about monitor their behavior when they "GET THEIR HAIR DID" verses when they their hair in it's natural state. It would be great to hear your findings.
Keep your sanity at all cost. Just what the Hair Dr. ordered!

HAIR WEAVE EXPERIENCE THAT CAUSED PAIN!

How many women leave the salon chair in "DISCOMFORT OR PAIN" OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN, with a FABULOUS Hairstyle/WEAVE and never say a word to their Cosmetologist/Hairstylist?
INSANITY, INSANITY, INSANITY

This is unfair to the cosmetologist/hairstylist that is concerned about "HAIR CARE" and moreso YOU! Communication is the key! We don't feel what you are experiencing when you are getting your hair done.....and I always ask my clients, "How does this feel? Is it too tight? Are you o.k.?" I can only believe they will be honest with me. Some are not, read on!
As the best at what I do, I NEVER have a hair complaint. However, just recently, a client of mine who I gave a weave style, and YES, I do weaves although I like for my clients to be natural. But there are different strokes for different folks. This doesn't mean I just drop them. I wasn't always into natural hair, and don't expect them to change immediately. IT'S A PROCESS!
Anyway back to the point. After a week, I saw her and she was complaining about tenderness and sensitivity on her hairline which caused her major aggravation during the week. Mind you, she just mentioned this too me. She didn't call me, but came to visit not for that reason. And the worse thing about it is, she didn't say anything until about 5 hours passed while she was at my home.
PEOPLE ARE INSANE FOR BEAUTY THAT CAN BE VAIN!

So immediately, I started taking the weave out and because I began to ruin the hairstyle, she told me to STOP! She said, "That's o.k. I have work and school next week and don't want to mess up my style. But, I refused to stop, and at first she was very angry with me, because I wouldn't allow her to go through the pain she was now in after waiting so long to say something to me. It was in just one small area, but PAIN IS PAIN, and need to be dealt with.
I was disappointed in her, because she should have told me immediately. I would have taken it out and redone everything, "NO CHARGE", NIPPING IT IN THE BUD, so that she nor I would have to go through the aggravation. I still had compassion for her and began a special treatment for her right away. The Hair Dr. will always make it right-SATISFACTION GUARANTEED!

STOP HOLDING ON TO HAIR BY THE STRANDS!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH with women/young ladies walking around with breakage/thinning ends that are hanging on by the strands. I know you think you are attempting to save your hair, but you are doing more damage than you realize. Once the ends began to split, it will continue to split until you cut off those "dead" ends...and that's exactly what they are, DEAD!

Would you have a relationship with a "dead" man? NO! Anything dead should be buried and separated from that which has life? Even a relationship where there the intimacy, communication and support is not active/dead, robs the creative and excited energy from the one who is doing all the giving. Just the same with the hair. Split ends can eventually result in major hair breakage if it's not "SNIPPED IN THE BUD"-taken care of immediately.

To keep your hair at its optimum healthy state, it should be trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks....and besides, it just LOOKS GOOD. Ladies, you know when your hair looks good, you feel good. That's what it's all about. I mean, come on, your hair is your "GLORY" located at the crown of your head. So it just realizing this, it should be adorned.

Hair Violation! You're Under Arrest!

In my travels, I saw a young girl, maybe a high school student who decided for today to wear her hair in a straight style. No curls, no bump, just straight with a side part in the front. That would have been fine, but their were a few HAIR VIOLATIONS, and if it was legal to arrest people for this purpose, I would have taken her to jail-Dr. Hair Care jail-just to fix it, charge her for her violation and send her on her way, now looking good and in right standing with the Hair Law.
Violations:

1o1. Her ends were split. It looked like a roller coaster ride of unevenness.
102. Her hair wasn't bone straight, not even yaky straight, but NAPPY STRAIGHT.
103. Her new growth seems as if it had been growing in for a few months.
I have no more room on my violation ticket to add.
Corrections:
101. Trim all split ends. It will only get worse if you attempt to hold on to those little straggly ends.
102. Either get a relaxer to get the effect of a straight look or go with a natural nappy style. Nappy is fine, but let the style have eye appeal.
103. You can blow dry your new growth and pull it out with a flat iron all the way through to the ends to achieve the straight look if you are due for a relaxer and for some reason aren't able to get it at the time.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO CUT YOUR HAIR TO GO BACK NATURAL

Many women think they have to cut all their relaxed hair if they decide to go back natural. I say NO! Not just to say no, but I have done it and worked with many clients, even family members who have done the same......and NO BREAKAGE! HOW WONDERFUL!

The majority of the women I speak to that have long hair would like to keep the length as their new growth grows in. But how do you manage two totally different textures without damaging your hair? What product is best to use to hold your natural hair in place if you would like to slick it into a simple ponytail style. I have the answer!

Hair Violation!-You're Under Arrest!

Why do "we", as women, who have thinning or bald edges, wear ponytails pulled to the back, slicks with the little bit of hair to cover the thin/balding areas or continue to get braids? This is a HAIR VIOLATION!-YOU ARE UNDER ARREST!

What happens when you're under arrest? You have to "STOP IT!" IT is whatever you were doing. In this case, "TAKE YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM THE HAIR AND PUT THEM UP!" Putting your hands up is a sign of "I SURRENDER" so that the Police (Hair Police)-Me-can take over.
The reason why I said ME is because there are some Hairstylist that will continue to braid their clients' hair knowing that they have a thinning issue. HOW SAD! Some of them will even style their clients' hair without any consideration of the thinning area. What I mean is, create a hairstyle that will cover those edges until you finish the proper treatment if it isn't too late.

You Lose it when You Glue it!

Many women don't realize that hair glue is also another reason why they maybe experiencing thinning of hair or permanent hair loss. Some hairstylists use bonding glue on the hair, others use it on the scalp. One way is no better than the other.

I have a client who had tracks/bonded extensions in her hair (done by someone else) and when it was time for her to take them out, she had the hardest time. She used sheen spray, hair glue remover and conditioner, and still had a struggle. As she removed the tracks so did she remove tiny strands of her hair.

I also have a client who had the bonding directly on her scalp and even so, it overlaps onto the hair. Also, with this method if it's not done carefully or removed carefully, the hair can be pulled directly from the root .

I do know that if you are going to have tracks/bonded extensions, have a professional with a history of hair care do it for you. Why? They are not just giving you a Fabulous look without concern for healthy hair. Always look for quality hair care service, especially if you are into getting weaves, extensions or braids done on a regular basis.

BATTLE SCARS FROM HAIR PINS!

Who would think that hair pins can be used as a weapon? Well, it's true.
About two weeks ago one of my client's needed a hair design for a wedding and I wasn't available. So of course she had to find someone else to give her a designer pinup. A few days after the wedding, I saw her in passing on the street at a small community shopping center and the first thing she said was, "I have to get my hair done over, these pins are killing my head."
My question was, "Why didn't you just relieve yourself of the pain by taking the pins out?" This I said to myself because I know the answer. Most women will endure the "BATTLE SCARS FROM HAIR PINS", just to look good. How crazy does that sound. So, she scheduled an appointment, but kept the style until she was able to get a fresh hairstyle.

Poofy dooby! OH NO!

I have a new hair client. Great News! One who has been reading my blogs and decide to call me. When I spoke to her she mentioned, her dooby's are puffy. She needs the Hair Dr.'s help!

First of all, no beautician/hairstylist should give their client a dooby if the hair is not freshly relaxed up til about 3 weeks. After that a different method should be used to keep the roots/new growth as straight as the ends.
I can accomplish this dooby style with or without rollers; with relaxed or natural hair. The magic is in the method.

DON'T LET ANYONE PUT THEIR HANDS IN YOUR HEAD!

I just left a former client's home-get it-"FORMER CLIENT"-who had beautiful hair at one time. It was probably around the time I was her ONE AND ONLY Hair Dr.

You know sometimes people go the cheaper route to obtain the quality maintenance they are receiving, and in the beginning it SEAMS as if they're getting just that-QUALITY. This is what she did. Then, something happened or moreso is noticed that wasn't noticed before after a while. Her hair is thinner now than it was before and maybe before "she" didn't pay attention because the styles were great.
There is more to just a FABULOUS hairstyle. The more is this: How is the person you entrusted to do your hair caring for it? Do you know? Does it matter? Do you even ask what products are being used in your hair? or Do you say, "This is what I want, just do it!" without even asking if the styles, weaves, etc. you desire is best for your hair at the time?
My now, client again, and that's why I'm the Hair Dr., needed help for her sick hair and of course, I delivered. The entire time she complained how "THEY MESSED UP MY HAIR"! The correction took a little longer than she expected, so she asked, "My hair was really jacked huh?" and I was honest by saying, "Yes!"

What really gave me joy in the end was the big SMILE on her face when I was completed. Be more conscious of who you allow to PUT THEIR HANDS IN YOUR HEAD because you just might LOSE IT-YOUR HAIR!

DON'T RUSH THE DRYER! If you are told you should stay under the dryer for 25 minutes to allow the conditioner to properly penetrate to the core of your hair follicle, then do so.

This is especially for those who have hair breakage and are in fear of getting your hair cut because "it may not grow back" the way you desire. At this time if you do so, you will not have to worry about that. This is a special time of the month that even if you cut your hair, it will flourish.

So Go For It- Do a NEW YOU- just because or because you have to and I guarantee your hair will love you.

DON'T CUT TO STUNT!

There are many people who question why they have a hard time growing their hair and getting it to a desired length.

This is because many are not aware that there are special times each month that is perfect to cut your hair because is stimulates hair growth. However, there are other times in the month, if you cut your hair it stunts the growth.
It is not that hair doesn't grow. It does. Hair has life, and anything that has life grows. It is how you take care of it that will determine if you will experience hair loss and breakage or flourishing growth.

So DON'T CUT TO STUNT!

STRENGHTEN YOUR HAIR!

Below are 5 STEPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR HAIR.

1. Drink at least 8 8oz. glasses of water daily.
2. Increase your intake of salads at least 3 per day. Make your salad look like a rainbow with a array of colors of vegetables.
3. Stimulate the scalp by brushing first with a paddle brush. The root is what determines how healthy your hair will be, so open up the pores to increase in oxygen intake.
4. Brush your hair with a natural bristle brush.
5. Get frequent scalp massages, especially when you have your hair shampooed
and conditioned.

HAIR STARVATION!

Is your hair starving for light because it's suffocated by weaves?

Are you experiencing hair loss at any cost because you constantly get braids, weaves or wear wigs?

STOP! Even if it's just for a moment. Your hair needs a breath of fresh air, sunlight and proper nourishment from natural shampoos and frequent conditioners in order to grow at optimal health.
I have many personal clients who have eventually stopped wearing the weaves/braids/wigs and embraced the beauty of their own hair. As I worked with them, little by little, treating their hair and allowing it to rest from the
"ADD ONS", from time to time, their hair began to flourish because it was being properly nourished. It is a gradual process.
Weaves, Wigs and extensions are like an addiction, once you start you don't want to give it up. But in the end, your hair suffers the loss at this cost and you lose your natural beauty of your own hair that is being masked by the artificial. It is also the lazy way out because you don't have to maintain the health of your hair.
Take a vacation from the mask of artificial, let your own hair down to relax from the stress of "ADD ONS". Your hair will love you!

DANGERS OF BRAIDS!

Today, Men and Women get hair added or what we call "extensions". Yes men! Some of you may not want to admit it, but you do....It's your "thang", do what you want to do. However you must be informed of the "DANGERS OF HUMAN HAIR EXTENSIONS".

It is what it is, hair from a human whether donated for your cause from a living or deceased human . Hair caries the personality and attitude of the person it belongs to.

Just what the Hair Dr. ordered!
